Movie Synopsis :
Dr. Robert Laing (Hiddlestone) is the newest resident of a luxurious apartment in a high-tech concrete skyscraper whose lofty location places him amongst the upper class. Laing quickly settles into high-society life and meets the building’s eccentric tenants: Charlotte (Miller), his upstairs neighbor and bohemian single mother; Wilder (Evans), a charismatic documentarian who lives with his pregnant wife Helen (Moss); and Mr. Royal (Irons), the enigmatic architect who designed the building. 

About Movies :
Class tensions inside a state-of-the-art building may ring familiar to New Yorkers (“poor doors,” anyone?), but they’re taken to a visceral, visually spectacular extreme in “High-Rise,” adapted from a novel by sci-fi author J.G. Ballard. Tom Hiddleston is well-to-do Dr. Laing, a recent arrival at the titular skyscraper, where the elite live up top and the commoners (including Elisabeth Moss as a very pregnant mother) near ground level. The master architect (Jeremy Irons) maintains a Versailles-like garden on the building’s roof and a social circle of the useless and rich (among them James Purefoy and Sienna Miller).

Laing is our ostensible protagonist as infrastructure fails and violent tribal warfare ensues, but his placid character’s such an enigma, it’s hard to latch on to him — or anyone — as a guide to the chaos in the strobing, gore-strewn hallways. Director Ben Wheatley (“Kill List”) is masterful with arresting imagery set in a dystopian spin on the ’70s; less so with a compelling narrative.

About Movies :
Even by diminished B-movie standards and the name Steven Seagal above the title  “Asian Connection,” about a pair of American bank robbers who set up shop in Southeast Asia, is a dumb, boring dud.

Though the promotional material might suggest otherwise, the big guy isn’t among the perpetrators.

Those would be the lesser-known John Edward Lee and Byron Gibson, who run into a bit of trouble when they knock off a bank belonging to a ruthless  as opposed to, say, happy-go-lucky  drug lord, played by Seagal.

After an unplanned turn of events puts his partner out of the picture, Lee’s Jack teams with his pretty girlfriend, Avalon (Pim Bubear), who also occasionally pitches in as the narrator. But those anticipating "Bonnie and Clyde"-style fireworks will be out of luck.

Whether or not you accept the tenets of Christianity, “Last Days in the Desert,” Rodrigo García’s austere depiction of the temptations of Christ, offers a quietly compelling portrait of the human side of Jesus, wrestling with his doubts while wandering through the Judean desert. Jesus (Ewan McGregor), called Yeshua, the Hebrew name for Jesus, is accompanied by a teasing, satanic doppelgänger (also Mr. McGregor) whom only he can see.

In a mocking tone, the demon declares, “I am a liar — that is the truth,” and baits Yeshua about his faith. Yeshua’s heavenly father, about whom the demon seems more knowledgeable than Yeshua, is more Old Testament then New. In the demon’s description, he is as vain, temperamental and easily distracted as a spoiled emperor and cares more about his power than his loved ones.

In this movie of few words, there are no extended theological debates or lengthy quotations from Scripture. What dialogue exists is down to earth and devoid of oratorical pomposity. There no parables, words of wisdom or reflections on eternal life. Yeshua’s relationship to God is personal and private.

Much of the film’s poetic eloquence lies in the cinematography of Emmanuel Lubezki (“Birdman” and “The Revenant,” among others). Filmed in natural light, the craggy desert vistas beneath a cloudy sky evoke a magnificent desolation. (The movie was shot in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in Southern California.) In its searching depth, the soundtrack by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans evokes the brooding music of Arvo Pärt.

Family dynamics matter more than festering undead in “What We Become,” a Danish horror movie that, like the first season of “Fear the Walking Dead,” examines the rapid disruption of social order when a mysterious virus threatens an affluent suburb.

That preference for lingering on inchoate terrors over visible monsters, though, creates an extended tease that will frustrate genre expectations and make this modest, elegant little movie a tough sell to zombie-saturated audiences. Yet the writer and director, Bo Mikkelsen, has spent his money wisely, building a believably imperfect family of four around the strong actress Mille Dinesen, who plays the increasingly distraught mother, Pernille, with velvety control.

Muting the usual cacophony of manipulative musical cues and assaultive sound effects — for long stretches, the movie is almost hushed — Mr. Mikkelsen stirs claustrophobia into panic.

Whit Stillman’s debut film, “Metropolitan,” contained a spirited exchange about “Mansfield Park,” and indeed his sensibility always seemed ideal for Jane Austen. And so it has come to pass: Stillman’s latest film adapts an Austen novella called “Lady Susan,” and the result is the sharpest, least sentimental and possibly the best version of Austen yet.

Lady Susan (Kate Beckinsale) has a dead husband, depleted finances and a marriageable daughter, Frederica (Morfydd Clark). She also has a prospective husband for Frederica, the blockhead Sir James Martin (Tom Bennett, in an inspired comic turn), and in her spare time she flirts with her sister-in-law’s brother (Xavier Samuel). Best of all, for Stillman fans, Beckinsale has Chloë Sevigny, her co-star in Stillman’s “Last Days of Disco,” as her confidante. You can have the guys in the capes, this is the reunion of the year.

Lady Susan is so smoothly manipulative she could give Scarlett O’Hara a seminar, and it’s a giddy joy to watch her scheme and listen to her unique take on life. (“Too old to be governable, too young to die,” she sighs about her friend’s husband.) Despite a polished period look, this is no cake-frosting romantic Austen. Stillman’s version shines because like the author, he is wise to how class and money affect matters of the heart.

The latest in a long line of horror films shamelessly ripping off the Brothers Grimm won't leave you believing in fairy tales. It will, however, restore your faith in genetics.

That's because its lead actor, Ethan Peck, is the grandson of Gregory Peck. And he's so drop-dead handsome and chiseled (qualities that the film exploits endlessly) that it's not surprising that he's the face of the new Ferragamo fashion film campaign.  Whether or not he's inherited his grandfather's acting talent is another story, since The Curse of Sleeping Beauty provides little opportunity for him to do anything other than look pained.

Cross “Dog Day Afternoon’’ with “The Big Short’’ and throw in a dash of “Network’’ and you’ve got “Money Monster,’’ a clever financial thriller with comic overtones that’s a solid investment of your time thanks to stellar work by George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Clooney is in top form, leveraging his star persona as Lee, a self-loathing TV financial guru (think Jim Cramer) who pushes stocks to his gullible audience with props, puns, flashy graphics and backup dancers.

A high-tech stock Lee touts, Ibis Clear Capital, drops $800 million in the blink of an eye. So Lee invites his pal, Ibis CEO Walt (Dominic West) to come in for a softball interview on his show “Money Matters,” where the CEO can spin a tale of how a “computer glitch’’ wiped out investors.

Walt doesn’t show, but Lee has an uninvited guest, Kyle (a very good Jack O’Connell), an angry package-delivery man from Queens, who wants an explanation of where his $60,000 investment in Ibis went. His hostile takeover involves forcing Lee to don an explosive jacket at gunpoint on live TV while Kyle holds the trigger.

Lee is spectacularly ill-equipped to give Kyle what he wants, but fortunately Lee has a preternaturally unflappable and whip-smart director in Patty (Roberts in her juiciest role in years).

Patty has to calm down the terrified Lee, keep him from antagonizing Kyle, make Lee participate in “real journalism” (probably for the first time in his life) and, oh yeah, hold off the overeager cops.

I don’t want to give away too much about “Money Monster,’’ which takes place more or less in real time and eventually moves the action out of the TV studio and into the teeming streets of lower Manhattan.

But it’s packed with more twists than a bag of pretzels, even if some of them strain credulity a bit. And there are more than a few lighthearted cutaways about Asian programmers, Icelandic hackers and a producer who tests a new “erectile cream’’ on himself.

For years pharmaceuticals have polled high on lists of industries that Americans loathe, and Uruguayan-Mexican director Rodrigo Plá’s thriller shows Mexicans must feel the same way. Sonia (a powerful Jana Raluy) needs to get her dying husband back on a drug that could save him. The drug company, playing the title role, has different ideas. No one will even talk to her. That is, until Sonia pulls a gun.

It’s an uncommonly swift movie, clocking in at 74 minutes; the similarly themed “John Q” ran almost two hours. This is a pared-down film that often shows things indirectly, focusing on a face or a room while something vital is happening outside of camera range. It is engrossing, even funny at times, but it is a bit too jagged in execution to properly build to its tragic climax.

Blumhouse Productions stays in “Paranormal Activity”/“Insidious” mode with “The Darkness,” its latest slick-looking, modestly budgeted ghost-fest. From the troubled child who communes with the beyond to the featureless suburban home that hosts malicious spirits, this movie ticks all the boxes for modern mainstream shockers.

The cast is the typical mix of accomplished vets and talented newcomers. Kevin Bacon and Radha Mitchell play Peter and Bronny Taylor, a seemingly happily married couple privately coping with his affairs, her alcoholism and their two troubled kids: anorexic teen Stephanie (Lucy Fry) and autistic preadolescent Mikey (David Mazouz).

Then the Taylors’ house becomes a staging ground for all manner of freaky occurrences: wild animal infestations, inexplicable stenches, inky black spots on the walls and so on. At first, everyone blames Mikey, who’s always been quirky. But eventually the family can’t deny a supernatural explanation.

“The Darkness” was directed by Greg McLean, who had a cult hit a decade ago with the brutal serial killer thriller “Wolf Creek.” This new film doesn’t have that one’s elemental pull. The story’s pacing is slack and choppy, spending most of its first hour moving from one bizarre incident to the next with no sense of where all the mayhem may be heading.
