The First Monday in May follows the creation of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's most attended fashion exhibition in history, "China: Through The Looking Glass," an exploration of Chinese-inspired Western fashions by Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton. With unprecedented access, filmmaker Andrew Rossi captures the collision of high fashion and celebrity at the Met Gala, one of the biggest global fashion events chaired every year by Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour. Featuring a cast of renowned artists in many fields (including filmmaker Wong Kar Wai and fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano) as well as a host of contemporary pop icons like Rihanna, the movie dives into the debate about whether fashion should be viewed as art.

Ahalf-dozen fascinating stories intertwine in the documentary "The First Monday in May," a film that suffers from the diffusion — although director Andrew Rossi mostly stands accused of being overly attuned to his subject's rich possibilities.

In a broad sense, "The First Monday in May" is about the Metropolitan Museum of Art's popular 2015 exhibit "China: Through the Looking Glass," a collection of fashion designs inspired by Chinese culture. The best-attended fashion-related event at the Met since "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty," "Looking Glass" helped settle some of the controversy over whether designing clothes is just "decorative art."

But the show also sparked new controversies, which Rossi engages thoughtfully. Many of the featured designers were inspired by "Orientalist" stereotypes. Does displaying those works tell a story that shouldn't be ignored, or does it also exploit the exotic trappings of the Far East?

As with Rossi's acclaimed documentary "Page One: Inside the New York Times," "First Monday" covers too much ground, here weaving in the involvement of Vogue editor Anna Wintour and the complex planning behind the celebrity-studded opening gala.

That said, the famous faces give the movie a touch of glamour, which helps enhance curator Andrew Bolton's vision. Debates about how best to represent both fashion and China — with the likes of Baz Luhrmann and Wong Kar-wai weighing in — are provocative and useful. But Rihanna walking the red carpet in an Asian-inspired ensemble is fine art in motion.

 Adderall Diaries" is a complex, absorbing, at times profound look at how we choose to remember our past. What the script, adapted by director Pamela Romanowsky from the memoir by Stephen Elliott, lacks in cohesion and practicality it makes up for with its risky mélange of ideas, emotions and perspectives.

The film's Stephen Elliott (James Franco) is a notable if self-destructive New York author with a raft of inner demons, most of which have been ascribed — both personally and in print — to his unstable, abusive father, Neil (Ed Harris), who terrorized him as a child. As an adult, the attractive, charismatic Stephen suffers from drug addiction, a dark pursuit of pain and pleasure, and now, a perhaps dubious case of writer's block.

The author's troubles double, however, when the estranged Neil, said to be dead in Stephen's memoir, shows up at a bookstore reading very much alive and publicly brands his son a fraud. This revelation not only reopens a festering filial wound for Stephen but instantly sends his career into a James Frey-like tailspin, to the consternation of his hard-working editor (Cynthia Nixon).

Although Rio, I Love You is a collaborative project featuring almost a dozen distinctive filmmakers from all over the world, from Fernando Meirelles (City of God) to Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty), it surprisingly coheres into one consistently clichéd love letter to a city, and intended for the most gullible of foreigners. The film's only real triumph is the seamless stitching together of multiple short stories through a decidedly Brazilian inability to see cinema as something other than an opportunity to both emulate and please “the developed world.” This hygienization of Rio de Janeiro into what at times looks like a soulless Southern California town, and other times like an ersatz Montmartre neighborhood straight out of Amelie, is so scandalous it feels like a spoof of the Cities of Love series, of which this is the third installment.

Whether tracing the misadventures of a happy-go-lucky old homeless woman (Fernanda Montenegro) getting harassed by police, a man (Wagner Moura) quarreling with God as he hang-glides around the Christ the Redeemer statue, or a taxi driver (Michel Melamed) lamenting the end of his marriage to every passenger he picks up, the filmmakers wildly aestheticize Rio, reducing it to the lasting visual tropes of travel advertising, from the Copacabana sidewalk to the sugarloaf mountain. We never learn anything new about the city, except that it's apparently chockfull of white foreigners, either actors or millionaires from the United States and Australia, for whom Rio is but an open invitation to swim, rock-climb, gawk at women, or photograph cute street kids.

Follows several of Cuba's top drag racers as they struggle to prepare their classic American cars for the first official car race since the Cuban Revolution. The vintage American cars that rumble through the streets of Havana have long served as four-wheeled emblems of Cuba and its roots in the past. Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt’s serviceable but slightly drawn-out documentary “Havana Motor Club” shows that this grand automotive heritage feeds a racing culture, despite years of government limitations on competitions.

We’re introduced to Tito, Rey, Jote, Piti and Carlos, racers who share pride in their mighty machines. They muck about with the engines, engage in chest pounding, bemoan that they can’t race enough and sometimes even get to race. The one-on-one matchups are more exciting for the zeal of the drivers than for the occasional dashboard-camera views.

Rather than linger over the curves of cars, Mr. Perlmutt keys the pace of the film to the stop-and-go progress in reforming the rules against auto racing. The public contests were initially stopped by the country’s revolutionaries as elitist. When a competitive event is finally permitted to proceed, it’s scuttled because of a visit by Pope Francis. When another event does take place, it’s nearly derailed by unsuccessful crowd control, in what feels like a metaphor for the challenges of harnessing the popular will. (Carlos’s dependence on a Cuban-American parts supplier suggests its own conflicted parable about capitalist influence.)
