The found footage concept may have reached its endpoint with the deeply unsatisfying “The Final Project,” opening in limited release today before expanding nationwide in March. For years now, heavily inspired by the critical and commercial success of “The Blair Witch Project,” we’ve watched young people with recording equipment fall victim to supernatural forces. Again and again, filmmakers have foregone horror genre elements like atmosphere or even plot in an attempt to provide a you-are-there experience. At their best, found footage films transport us across that line that gives us the safety of “it’s only a movie.” At their worst, their faux realism fails to hide the poor acting, lack of screenwriting and incompetent filmmaking. Such is the case with “The Final Project,” an aggravating, meandering journey through a reportedly haunted location in the South.

Ashley Gilbertson’s photographs of the Iraq war have the power to freeze the blood in your heart. Turning the pages of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, it’s impossible to merely skim through the images of oppressed Kurds, stunned Baghdad residents, weary U.S. Marines, and dead insurgents sprawled in the growing pond of their own blood. “It was never my intention to become a war photographer,” Gilbertson writes at the beginning of the book. “If people wanted to kill each other, so be it, not my problem.” Famous last words. In 2003, he was in northern Iraq among the Kurds, working as a freelance photographer, when the U.S. began its invasion from the south. 

Eventually, he signed a contract with The New York Times and was criss-crossing the country, following the action to Baghdad, Samarra, Tikrit, and Falluja, his lens capturing the many ways people kill each other. The best of those photos have been gathered into Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (the military’s phonetic acronym, politely translated, amounts to “What the frick?”). 

That spirit of surprise and confusion hangs over the book, both in the pictures and in the textual interludes that dramatize Gilbertson’s experiences. He rarely misses an opportunity to illustrate the irony and heartbreak of the events unfolding around him. Here, for instance, is one photo’s caption: “A doctor at the morgue in Ramadi stands reflected in a pool of blood while waiting for more victims from a car bombing.” As good as the photos are, the stories behind them are even more riveting. His account of moving under fire with Marines as they assault Falluja will leave you dry mouthed and looking at the distant conflict in a new light. Like legendary combat photographers Robert Capa and David Douglas Duncan, Gilbertson knows it only takes a shutter click to bring the war home.

About Movie :

Ghost stories and haunted house tales are common across a wide variety of cultures, so it seems like India, with its stunning diversity of traditions, would offer ample material to enliven the horror genre. Johannes Roberts’ feature only intermittently hints at this rich heritage, however, mostly adopting the cultural trappings of the subcontinent to dress up a fairly routine account of loss and supernatural transgression. Fox’s March release could get a boost internationally from the worldwide dispersion of South Asian audiences, but it may miss the mark domestically. 

In setting the scene for the film’s crucial first act, Roberts may take things somewhat too leisurely, introducing American couple Michael (Jeremy Sisto) and Maria (Sarah Wayne Callies), who live a privileged life in Mumbai, where Michael deals in high-end antiques and Maria looks after their two children, Oliver (Logan Creran) and younger sister Lucy (Sofia Rosinsky). So when a terrible road accident sends her SUV plunging into a river and Maria can only save Lucy as water pours inexorably into their vehicle, she feels entirely responsible for Oliver’s death. Chronic depression leads her to attempt suicide, alarming hopelessly confused Michael, who has no idea how to draw his wife back from the brink of oblivion. In secret, their housekeeper Piki (Suchitra Pillai) offers Maria a potential source of solace.

The world is full of men content to spend their lives within a few miles of where they were born, men who will love one woman, learn one language and go to their graves hardly having dreamed at all. These are not the men about whom Werner Herzog makes movies, although it took until age 72 for the chronicler of such bombastic souls as “Aguirre” and “Fitzcarraldo” to deem a woman worthy of one of his mighty portraits. Better late than never, and though Nicole Kidman is hardly the female Klaus Kinski, in the formidable character epic “Queen of the Desert,” she conveys with quiet determination what Kinski never could: the kind of conviction that changes the world.

Leaning more on romance than one might suppose to capture such an independent spirit as Gertrude Lowthian Bell, whose self-directed explorations among and dealings with the Middle East’s many conflicting tribes informed how the former Ottoman Empire eventually came to be divided, “Queen of the Desert” looks and feels big enough for megaplex play, yet lacks the central dramatic conflict that drove “The English Patient” and “Lawrence of Arabia” to such mainstream success. In his career, Herzog has seldom been accused of subtlety, but this particular narrative is actually so understated, it will have to be handled as a specialty title in most territories.

You don’t realize how thoroughly a certain style of animated children’s movie has become the norm until you see one like “Snowtime!” that doesn’t fit the mold. The slower pacing, the lack of authority figures who need to be defied or corrected, the subdued rather than out-front messages — this movie looks and feels quite different from most recent animated blockbusters.

It’s winter vacation, and Luke (the voice of Angela Galuppo) and the other young children in a small town are bored. Eventually they decided to occupy themselves with an epic snowball fight, though “snowball war” is more accurate: this battle stretches over several days and centers on control of an absurdly elaborate snow fort one of the warring teams has built.

Luke is the reluctant leader of one team. Sophie (Lucinda Davis), a new arrival in town who catches Luke’s fancy, commands the other. What starts out as a friendly game becomes more cutthroat as it goes along, and the children soon learn that even a snowball war can have serious, sobering consequences. As the snowballs are flying, we also learn the reason for Luke’s reluctance to be drawn into the battle: His father died in a real war.

If “Forsaken” were any more old-fashioned, lenser Rene Ohashi might have filmed it in black-and-white, scripter Brad Mirman definitely would have trimmed the F-bombs from his dialogue, and the entire enterprise probably would bear the brand of RKO or Republic Pictures. Refreshingly and unabashedly sincere in its embrace of Western conventions and archetypes, this pleasingly retrograde sagebrush saga should play exceptionally well with currently under-served genre fans — except, perhaps, for those with low tolerance for salty language – and likely will enjoy a long shelf life as home-screen product after potentially profitable exposure in theatrical corrals.

The first-time onscreen pairing of Kiefer Sutherland and his dad, Donald Sutherland — as a prodigal son and his disapproving father — is a natural selling point for the film, one that conceivably could attract curiosity seekers not normally interested in oaters. But the casting also serves to enhance the emotional heft of the familiar storyline. These two evenly matched pros bring out the best in each other — maybe because they know exactly where to look for it — and the unaffected intensity of their key scenes together help make more than a few cliches seem, if not freshly minted, then newly reinvigorated.

The plot pivots on the return of gunslinger John Henry Clayton (Kiefer Sutherland) to his small Wyoming hometown of Fowler in 1872, several years after his Civil War service. During the time since his military discharge, John Henry has acquired a well-earned reputation as a fearsomely efficient shootist. And despite his announced intention to hang up his guns, just about everyone in Fowler — but especially his preacher father, Rev. William Clayton (Donald Sutherland) — is skeptical that he has had enough of death to last him a lifetime.

Embrace of the Serpent Full Movie

Ciro Guerra's Embrace of the Serpent opens on a stray bank of the Amazon river, the black-and-white frame's opacity so blown out by sunlight (and its reflection) that the river and the sky find no visible border. The jungle's lushness speaks for itself early and often, and while it's beyond played out to describe a film's location as one of its supporting characters, Guerra finds no small amount of serene menace from which to mine dramatic tension. Co-written with Jacques Toulemonde Vidal, the film's screenplay narrativizes a stitchwork of myth and history, concerning a fictitious psychedelic blossom, the yakruna, sought by two real-life white anthropologists: Theodor Koch-Grunberg (Jan Bijvoet) in 1909, and Richard Evans Schultes (Brionne Davis) some 40 or so years later. Both men are guided by an indigenous shaman, Karamakate (played alternately by Nibio Torres and Antonio Bolivar), who functions as the film's emotional anchor.

Cinematographer David Gallego's muscular tracking movements posit nothing so much as the question of arriving—of witnessing something for the first time, and with uncertain eyes. A man ostensibly standing outside of history's long march, Karamakate has long since accepted that he's the last remaining member of the Cohiuano tribe. As Theo's research suggests more survivors may be found upriver, the two enter into a shaky bargain, and Karamakate's handling of Theo—wheezing, emaciated, feverish, in search of the yakruna for his own medicinal benefit—allow for queasy overtures toward an upturned power dynamic. The parallel 1940s plotline is more subdued, but it carries its own unease: Even if Evans is the latest white man to arrive in the jungle insisting he means no harm, Karamakate's paranoid resentment, so evident in the man's body language, suggests he believes otherwise.

There are confident first features, and there’s The Witch, the exhilaratingly scary debut in which writer-director Robert Eggers tramples over the cowardice of the genre he’s just grabbed by the throat. Reverentially adapted from a ghoulish piece of Puritan folklore (much of the dialogue is lifted verbatim from 17th-century documents), The Witch is one of the most genuinely unnerving horror films in recent memory because Eggers has the guts to earn your fear. 

A family of fundamentalist pilgrims is banished from their walled New England settlement as punishment for an undefined conflict. They're forced to resettle in a gray stretch of field that lies on the lip of some truly sinister woods. It's Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong 2015

An audience for the ambitious if expectations-defying “Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong” can be forgiven for wishing one or the other of the film’s two garrulous characters — toy designer Ruby (Jamie Chung) and banker Josh (Bryan Greenberg), clearly attracted to one another — would shut up and kiss.

Conditioned as we are by scores of will-they-or-won’t-they romantic comedies about bumpy courtships, it’s natural to want a pair of likable people to get together, even if it takes time. But things aren’t quite so simple in “Already Tomorrow.”

Writer-director Emily Ting does a wonderful job of setting the emotional privacy of Josh and Ruby’s slow journeys — sharing unfulfilled dreams, teasing, flirting — against great, electrifying swaths of Hong Kong’s cityscape and teeming streets. The city becomes both visually and narratively complicit in the developing relationship, an epic backdrop for personal possibility and reinvention.

By the time Josh and Ruby meet again, he has become a writer — a sign that Ruby, who encouraged him, got under his skin. Neither is technically free to be with the other, yet they know there is something substantial to their mutual draw. But what to do about it?

Ting, to her credit, is more interested in the battle between heart and head, instinct and obligation, than in what follows. “Already Tomorrow” is about ambivalence, not gratification, and is more interesting for it.

Another riff on the aftermath of tragedy, Tumbledown is the meaningless title of a tender but clumsy romantic comedy about a grieving widow who still can’t get her life back in order and move on after her husband died two years ago in a freak hiking accident in the back woods of Maine. He was Hunter Miles, a lugubrious folk singer-songwriter who died too young after recording only one album, but it somehow achieved cult status among the kind of flower children who think Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen are true artists.

His wife Hannah (Rebecca Hall) still lives in the rustic cabin they shared, spending her days writing a biography of Hunter to secure his immortality. But the book is stalled, the writing is mediocre, and the words just won’t come easily. Maybe there isn’t enough material. As her pragmatic mother (played by a wasted Blythe Danner) always reminds everyone, “He only wrote 12 songs.”

To Hannah’s annoyance, a scholarly professor of pop culture at Hofstra University named Andrew McCabe (Jason Sudeikis) enters the picture with plans to write a book of his own. He already has a publisher. All he needs is permission and help in researching the late singer’s life and career. Hannah reacts rudely, driving him away. But, as movies go, she eventually succumbs to his charm and hires the egghead academic as a collaborator. The movie, a first-feature effort by Sean Mewshaw, a director of TV commercials, drags on aimlessly while the two mismatched writers argue, fight, lie, cheat, insult each other with sarcasm, and eventually fall reluctantly in love.

The latest entry into the mental illness movie genre is Paul Dalio's "Touched With Fire," which could have been aptly titled "Bipolar Disorder: A Love Story."

Katie Holmes stars as Emily, a.k.a. Carla, a poet who inadvertently checks herself into an institution while in the beginning throes of a manic upswing. There she connects with another poet, Marco, a.k.a. Luna (Luke Kirby), who turns their shared mania into an adventure. He has strong beliefs about abandoning his medication in favor of the creative energy of which he is possessed during his highs. The notion is liberating for Carla, and once the two come together, it's almost impossible to tear them apart, as much as their parents (Christine Lahti, Bruce Altman and Griffin Dunne) might try.

The film is directly inspired by the book "Touched With Fire: Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament" by Kay Jamison, which explores the link between great art and bipolar disorder. The film asks of its audience to reconsider the ways in which the disorder has been pathologized and medicated, or at least ponder how it has contributed to the art that we revere.

It revels in the beautiful, wild abandon of Carla and Luna's shared mania, though it's clearly unsustainable — and clear to the audience far before the film asserts that idea. Writer-director Dalio has firsthand experience with bipolar disorder, and his perspective sheds fresh light on the unique ways in which manic-depressive individuals experience love and creativity.

Carla and Marco are manic-depressive poets whose art is fueled by their emotional extremes. When they go off their meds, they end up in the same psychiatric hospital. As the chemistry between them stirs up their emotions, it intensifies their mania.Despite doctors' and parents' attempts to separate them, they pursue their beautiful but destructive romance which swings them from fantastical manic highs to suicidal depressive lows, until they have to choose between sanity and love.

The latest entry into the mental illness movie genre is Paul Dalio's "Touched With Fire," which could have been aptly titled "Bipolar Disorder: A Love Story."

Katie Holmes stars as Emily, a.k.a. Carla, a poet who inadvertently checks herself into an institution while in the beginning throes of a manic upswing. There she connects with another poet, Marco, a.k.a. Luna (Luke Kirby), who turns their shared mania into an adventure. He has strong beliefs about abandoning his medication in favor of the creative energy of which he is possessed during his highs. The notion is liberating for Carla, and once the two come together, it's almost impossible to tear them apart, as much as their parents (Christine Lahti, Bruce Altman and Griffin Dunne) might try.

The film is directly inspired by the book "Touched With Fire: Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament" by Kay Jamison, which explores the link between great art and bipolar disorder. The film asks of its audience to reconsider the ways in which the disorder has been pathologized and medicated, or at least ponder how it has contributed to the art that we revere.

It revels in the beautiful, wild abandon of Carla and Luna's shared mania, though it's clearly unsustainable — and clear to the audience far before the film asserts that idea. Writer-director Dalio has firsthand experience with bipolar disorder, and his perspective sheds fresh light on the unique ways in which manic-depressive individuals experience love and creativity.

Where to Invade Next opens like a sloppy stunt. Moore pretends that the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines, wounded by their losses and pyrrhic victories in every war since Korea, have finally asked him for advice. How to put the world to rights? Replies Moore, "Instead of using Marines, use me." Then the doc bursts into a montage of American sins: bank scandals, wrongful convictions, murdered abortion doctors, housing foreclosures. It's like Moore's best-of album, remixed. Over Bill Clinton's twenty-year-old State of the Union promise that "This country will hunt down terrorists and bring them to justice," Moore splices in last summer's Texas cop crushing a fourteen-year-old black teenager in a bikini. Moore's hits are hasty and scattered. Pretending he has the chance to discharge the Marines, is he just going to misfire his own shotgun?

Moore's conceit: He'll sail east on the USS Ronald Reagan to conquer Europe's best ideas. He visits the Continent's happier and more successful factories, schools, and jails, where he literally plants the American flag and demands to take their innovations home. The Europeans awkwardly nod.

First, Moore visits a working-class Italian couple who live like Kardashians with eight paid weeks of vacation. When he tells them many Americans are lucky to get two, the wife gasps, "A year?!" Moore asks an Italian CEO why she shares her wealth. She insists that she doesn't want to be richer at the cost of her employees' happiness.

The found footage concept may have reached its endpoint with the deeply unsatisfying “The Final Project,” opening in limited release today before expanding nationwide in March. For years now, heavily inspired by the critical and commercial success of “The Blair Witch Project,” we’ve watched young people with recording equipment fall victim to supernatural forces. Again and again, filmmakers have foregone horror genre elements like atmosphere or even plot in an attempt to provide a you-are-there experience. At their best, found footage films transport us across that line that gives us the safety of “it’s only a movie.” At their worst, their faux realism fails to hide the poor acting, lack of screenwriting and incompetent filmmaking. Such is the case with “The Final Project,” an aggravating, meandering journey through a reportedly haunted location in the South

Local folklore tells the story of the Lafitte Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana, once reportedly the inspiration for Tara in “Gone with the Wind” but now a run-down, dilapidated building, overrun by foliage and unoccupied. The idea that a found footage film could play off the era of hit TV shows like “Ghost Hunters” and take us to a real location to mine it for atmosphere is a great one, but director Taylor Ri’chard isn’t really interested in Lafitte. It’s a background that might as well be a Hollywood set or a house down the street from you it’s so poorly utilized. It has no personality when it should really be the star of the film.

Instead, we spend an inordinate amount of time with the six college students who have decided to spend the night at Lafitte for a graduation project (it’s not quite clear what the project would possibly look like in the end even after a scene in a classroom in which they tell their teacher about it). For half of the film’s remarkably short running time, we “hang” with the six students as they plan their project and head out to Lafitte. Such hanging includes a bit of character development in a potential love triangle, another possible hook-up, and, well, that’s about it. The “characters” in “The Final Project” are the kind of paper-thin movie folk who talk during the entire trip to the plantation about manscaping and how many people they’ve slept with. And imagine that inane chatter filmed from the back of a van with a bumpy handicam. It’s arguably the scariest scene in the movie.
